IBA2.1:An Introduction to Acrylic Paint and Colour Theory with Iona Breinhorst

A course designed to set beginners up with a painting kit, some colour theory and acrylic painting skills.

Description

Iona has created a set of 5 classes that will develop your confidence with colour and acrylic paint. Iona will help you set up a basic painting kit that will support you on your acrylic painting journey. While exploring colour theory you will have a chance to paint a project each week that will develop your skills. This class is best for beginners but will also include some extension options for those returning to art.

Session Information

Week 1: Tools, Materials, Primary and Complimentary Colours

In this lesson we will evaluate different painting supplies and discuss what to buy to set up your painting kit. We will set up and paint a primary and complimentary ‘Hibiscus Pop Art’ exploring primary and complimentary colours.

Supplies:

Please do not buy supplies before this lesson, bring what you have at home. This can be compared with the recommended list of materials for the rest of the course to create a ‘Painting Kit.’ In the first lesson you will be lent 2 paintbrushes, 1 canvas, 1 paper palette and shared paint for the first painting exercise.

Some time will be spent looking at what you have with some recommendations on building and purchasing your own ‘Painting Kit.’ Your final ‘Painting Kit’ will most likely include paint brushes (different sizes & types), acrylic paint (colours & grade), pencil, sharpener, eraser, paint palette, masking tape, tub for water, old towel, small spray bottle, an acrylic marker, palette knife, and canvasses.

At the end of each session we will discuss what is required for the next class.

Week 2 : Colour Relationships, Mixing and Blending.

In this lesson we will look at colour swatches, analogous colours, colour temperature, hue, saturation, mixing colours, blending colours and receding colours. We will set up a design for a colour wheel on a canvas for you to hang in your art space at home.

Supplies:

  • Your Painting Kit
  • A square canvas

Week 3: Balance, colour palette and layering acrylic paint.

In this lesson we will put some blending and acrylic paint layering skills into practice. Each student will design their own inspirational quote illustration with guidance and assistance as necessary. Students will be encouraged to choose their own colour palette and design.

Supplies:

  • Your Painting Kit
  • A canvas to suit your choice of quote

Week 4: Brushstrokes, Light & shadow

In this lesson we will practice using a wide brush to get different size lines and strokes while loading the brush with different shades of paint. As a class we will use photos to create a patten playing with light and shadow.

Supplies: Painting kit and canvas

Week 5: Superhero

In this lesson we will talk about transferring images to a large canvas using a grid to explode and copy images. This lesson is the last of the set and will leave you with work to complete at home independently. This should be a fun project making use of the skills and learning acquired during the course.

Supplies: Painting kit and canvas
