SAA: Textile Art Exploration with Sophie Austin
Students will learn to explore design ideas and develop them into an array of projects using stitch, mixed media and natural materials.
Description
Guided by textile designer Sophie, we will explore design concepts, with drawing, paint, mixed media expressions and take our projects into different textile and fabric mediums each week. We will learn flower hammering, simple hand embroidery, basic shibori techniques, fabric dyeing, nuno felting and blending natural materials with textile processes.
Students will make their choice of wall hangings, art pieces, scarfs, or fabric for cushion covers. Students are welcome to bring in small lightweight garments to treat for dyeing processes if desired.
Our processes and explorations will have a sustainability element and intrinsic connection to nature, including the option to use home grown natural dye plants.
Participants may choose their own inspirational starting point for this six week design, development and creation project, to actualise their ideas onto cloth using the various techniques taught. Come with some ideas or photographs from your environment, natural world or architecture as a starting point.
A significant element of this course will be focussed on artistic freedom, exploring what the different modalities can do. We will be finding mindfulness in creativity and therapy in the processes, while also making beautiful works to take home!
