Supplies
What to bring:
Paper
Pastelmat - either 24x30cm pad or 30x40cm pad. They come in a variety of colours which are all good - choose anything except the all white pad. Another option is to buy a couple of individual large sheets and cut them to size you want - choose dark green, dark blue or anthracite (only available at some art shops).
The tutor will have paper to buy per sheet.
Soft Pastels (not oil pastels)
If you are buying new, choose a smaller number of artist quality pastels in a range of darks, mids, lights eg. Unison, Schmincke, Art Spectrum, Rembrandt, Sennelier. Cheaper brands like mungyo and faber castell won’t give you the same results, but do bring whatever you have.
My favourite and most recommended brand - Unison pastels. The best value for money is half stick sets, available from Impressions Nelson (phone or email to order) or softpastels.com.au
Suggested Unison starter sets (depending on your budget): 16 half stick landscape set, 30 half stick assortment, 63 half stick assortment, 120 half stick set (the luxury option). Over time it’s easy to fill in the gaps by buying individual sticks of the colours you’re always looking for.
Essential (some sets will contain these already and Nicola will have some available to buy):
One very dark blue, green or purple pastel eg. Unison Dark 7,19 or 20, Unison A49, Sennelier 179 or 463 or similar
One very light soft pastel eg. Art spectrum extra soft 501 warm white, 502 lemon yellow, Schmincke 007O titanium yellow, 002O Perm Yellow 2 Light
