KBW: Slip Decorating Ceramic Workshop with Kim Boyd

In this interactive workshop you will learn the art of using coloured clay slips to decorate your ceramics taking them to the next level.

Description

Learn the art of using coloured clay slips to decorate your ceramics.

Scrafitto meaning: a form of decoration made by scratching through a surface to reveal a lower layer of a contrasting colour using slip on ceramics before firing.

The meaning of slip: This versatile liquid form of clay can be used in a multitude of different ways to create and embellish ceramic art. One such method involves using colored slips to create a marbleized look on pottery, which is reminiscent of Staffordshire-style English marbled slipware.

In this class you will create two plates and will learn the following techniques:

  1. How to mix up and colour your slips
  2. How to use the sgraffito technique to create your design
  3. How to use the marbling technique onto a clay slab and transfer onto a convex plaster mould.
  4. How to cleanly finish off your work in preparation for its first bisque firing
