Meet our team of talented tutors and presenters

Valerie Cuthbert

Initially I taught myself to paint using acrylics on paper and canvas, then in 2004 I joined a printmaking group and learned intaglio and relief printing techniques. 12 years later I am still enjoying painting and printmaking using my own press, and continuing to explore what it means to be an artist in the 21 Century. I love to use images from my garden, and of NZ native flowers, birds and landscapes. I am a realist using  images that people are familiar with, like tuis, oystercatchers, sparrows and terns.  I created a pastoral series with cows, sheep, hens and clover to reflect our farming heritage.

As a fabric artist I took part in many juried and selected exhibitions from 1985 – 1989 including: Wardenburg's Tauranga, the Auckland War memorial Museum, Academy of Fine Arts Wellington, CSA Gallery Christchurch, Suter Gallery Nelson, and won a Norsewear art award. During those years I held three solo shows of fabric art, at Brown's Mill, The Pumphouse and Gallery on One, Waiwera.

Since 2000 I have had several major solo exhibitions of paintings and prints: Roses at the Pumphouse, Landscapes and Wildflowers of NZ at The Pumphouse, Coastline at Mairangi Arts Centre, and  Birds, at Estuary Arts Centre. And taken part in many group shows.

At the same time I have won awards and had work included in many juried and selected exhibitions: North Shore City Art Awards (now Hibiscus and Bays Art Awards), Central Print Council of Aotearoa NZ exhibitions, Impressive lll, and lV at Nathan Homestead, the Academy of Fine Arts, Wellington, and the NZ Printmaking Awards First Impressions. This year I am  a finalist in the NZ Painting and Printmaking Awards in the Hamilton Gardens. During the 1980's and 90's I taught Community Education classes in a range of fabric techniques, and am pleased to be able to continue teaching and sharing my passion for printmaking now – I have a small group at home in my studio, and will be teaching lino for beginners in term 2 here at EAC.
